DESCRIPTION OF CLINICAL PRACTICE
Over the past 15 years of providing therapy, I have learned that simply being a human being, genuinely listening with kindness, is a powerful healing force in therapy. In addition, I have trained in a variety of therapeutic modalities, and use them as needed.
Currently I am excited about a new approach to working with stress and trauma, called Somatic Experiencing. In a Somatic Experiencing session you will receive guidance to access your own \"resources\" - those things in your life that are calming, nourishing, pleasant, grounding, soothing. You will be able to gently address any areas of stress, conflict, or tension in your being, and learn how the body holds and then naturally releases stress, given the right conditions. This approach is useful for symptoms related to PTSD.
I have experience in working with alcohol and drug addictions, and sexual addictions. Also, due to my own experience in fundamentalist Christianity, I appreciate the chance to help others who are struggling with their religious identity.
VIPASSANA/MEDITATION BACKGROUND
I have attended retreats at Spirit Rock for the past 20 years, and have attended sitting groups with James Baraz and at East Bay Community Meditation Center. I attend satsangs with nondual teachers through East Bay Open Circle, such as Isaac Shapiro.. Other teachers that have influenced me: Eckhart Tolle, Pema Chodron, and Byron Katie.. I use a compassionate awareness practice to bring kindness to my own ups and downs in day-to-day living. I use Thich Nhat Hanh mindfulness practices while walking to the store, or riding the bus.
RELEVANT CLINICAL TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
I received an MS in Counseling from California State University, Hayward, in 1990. I have trained in Narrative Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, and Somatic Experiencing. However, I believe I have learned the most from being in my own personal therapy for over 20 years, and from all the clients who have taught me about hope, resilience, and kindness.
