DESCRIPTION OF CLINICAL PRACTICE
I practice psychotherapy with adults, adolescents, couples, and families. I see people who are in moments of life transition, who often arrive manifesting depression, anxiety, co-dependency issues, addiction or alcohol use/abuse, ACA issues, trauma, and post-traumatic stress. My theoretical approach is a "disciplined eclectic" and integrative, drawing from my training in Buddhist Abidhamma, humanistic psychotherapy, psychodynamic/analytic therapy, Jungian analytic/archetypal therapy/analysis, somatic and existential perspectives, transpersonal psychotherapy, family systems therapy, self psychology, cognitive behavioral psychotherapy. I endeavor to ally myself with the innate healing capacity in the person or couple/family system, to bring compassion, understanding, insight, and wise action into being. I work to focus on mindfulness, empowerment, and the transformation of obstacles into challenges. This may entail exploring unconscious dynamics and motivations using meditation, psychoanalysis, dreamwork, gestalt encounter, narrative reframing, journaling, bibliotherapy, cognitive-behavioral exercises, and other modalities. Brief (20 plus sessions) and longer term models may be appropriate.

VIPASSANA/MEDITATION BACKGROUND
I have been a practicing Buddhist meditator since 1969. I entered the Dharma through the Zen gate, becoming an ordained Zen Buddhist monk and priest trainee for several years, before ordaining as a monastic in the Burmese Theravadin tradition. My preceptor was Taungpulu Kaba-Aye. I also now train in the Thai tradition, and have taken intensive Vajrayana teachings. As a layperson I have been practicing Vipassana in many retreat formats, including annual temporary ordination, three month retreats, ten day retreats, weekend retreats. I also practice the meditative arts of aikido, t'ai chi ch'uan, and yoga.
