DESCRIPTION OF CLINICAL PRACTICE I practice psychotherapy from a psychodynamic point of view that directly engages each client and respects their individuality. My private practice includes adults, children, adolescents, and families. I see the psychotherapeutic process as empowering each person to achieve better self-understanding and live a more meaningful and fulfilling life. The integration of one's spiritual life and practices into one's overall well-being may also be an important focus of psychotherapy.
Sliding scale fees are available. I do not bill insurance directly; however, you may ask your insurance carrier if they will reimburse you all or a portion of my fee with appropriate documentation.
I offer psychological assessment services to children of all ages. Please call to ask about this if you are interested.
VIPASSANA/MEDITATION BACKGROUND
I've been an active practitioner of meditation since 1993, and have a daily meditation practice and practice in the Tibetan Vajrayana tradition under the guidance of a qualified teacher. I have sat a number of weeklong retreats with Spirit Rock teachers, including Sylvia Boorstein, James Baraz, Eugene Cash, Christina Feldman, and Michelle MacDonald.
RELEVANT CLINICAL TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
I am a graduate of the Wright Institute in Berkeley (Ph.D., 2000) and Stanford University (B.A., 1985). My dissertation, "From Dissociation to Reverie", was awarded the Wright Institute's Outstanding Dissertation Award. Besides being in private practice, I teach and supervise interns and staff at West Coast Children's Clinic in Oakland. For a number of years I was Director of the Transpersonal Counseling Center in Palo Alto, and was also Clinical Faculty at UCSF, San Francisco General Hospital, Department of Psychiatry. During my graduate studies I trained at local sites known for the high quality of their internship programs, including UCSF, West Coast Children's Center, and McAuley Behavioral Health Services/Saint Mary's Hospital.
Prior to becoming a psychologist, I studied literature and languages at Stanford and Universite de Paris-Sorbonne. This background influences my ability to help the people with whom I work discover sources of meaning in their lives and access their own creativity.
