DESCRIPTION OF CLINICAL PRACTICE
I work with individuals, couples, families, and adolescents with a wide range of issues and problems in both short-term and long-term therapy. My approach varies with the nature of the client and the particular issue presented; but my primary orientation might be described as existential-analytic, which is a combination of the uncovering work of depth psychologies with the emphasis on living fully in the present moment of existential-humanistic and transpersonal psychologies. I also regularly call on techniques borrowed from other approaches, including role-playing, guided imagery, body-centered (hakomi) therapy, dream work, and art therapy. Issues I work with frequently include increasing self-understanding, enhancing self-esteem, relationship building, communication skills, depression, anxiety, narcissistic wounding, addictions, mid-life transitions, meaning and other existential issues, spiritual development, and integration of spirituality into daily life.
VIPASSANA/MEDITATION BACKGROUND
After practicing Transcendental Meditation for some twenty years, I attended my first vipassana retreat through Spirit Rock in 1997. I've had a daily vipassana practice, combined with many many retreats over the years ever since. I'm also an occasional member of Jack Kornfield's Monday night sangha, as well as a member of Diamond Heart VI, which incorporates a great deal from the Theravadan tradition. I'm a firm believer in the transformational power of this path.
RELEVANT CLINICAL TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Both prior to receiving my psychologist's license and continuing to the present I have received supervision from, and consulted regularly with, Robert Walters, PhD, a brilliant clinician in the existential-analytic tradition and student of the noted San Francisco psychoanalyst Thomas Ogden, M.D. Most of my pre- and post-doctoral training was done at the Transpersonal Counseling Center in Palo Alto, which emphasizes integration of the psychological and the spiritual. I have additional certificates and/or training in psychodrama (with Harris Clemes), existential-humanistic psychotherapy (with James Bugental), dream work (with Jeremy Taylor), the enneagram (with Sue Ann McKean of the Helen Palmer school), and focusing (with Robert Lee). I also have a black belt in aikido, the Japanese art of harmony and blending. Prior to entering the field of psychology I was (and remain) an attorney, although my legal practice is now limited entirely to mediation and conciliation, in which I blend my legal, psychological, and vipassana training.
