DESCRIPTION OF CLINICAL PRACTICE
I do long-term, growth-oriented therapy, and have been practice for over thirty years. I combine mindfulness-based practices with analytically-oriented exploration, and in working with anxiety and depression I utilize the mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques of Jon Kabat-Zinn. I'm also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), and use this technique to help facilitate recovery from trauma and post-traumatic stress. Most recently, I’ve been exploring the use of compassion meditation in the treatment of anxiety disorders. I call this “heartfulness practice,” and an audio talk and guided heartfulness meditation can be found on the website of Howard Cohn’s meditation group (
www.misssiondharma.com). I have extensive experience in addressing issues in addiction recovery, treatment of depression and anxiety, and couple counseling. Those who would like to know more about how I think and work can read my bi-weekly column, "The Examined Life" which is published locally in the SF Bay Times and in a number of other publications around the country. An archive of these columns can be found on my website, www.tommoon.net, and anyone who would like to receive it directly may subscribe at no charge by emailing me at examlife@aol.com.
VIPASSANA/MEDITATION BACKGROUND
I have practiced various forms of meditation and yoga for 35 years, and have a daily Vipassana practice. My spiritual home is Spirit Rock Meditation Center, and my spiritual mentor is Howard Cohn. I do two to three week-long meditation retreats per year.
